The flavor of a mulato chili is somewhat similar to that of an ancho. Large in size, they are the same size as the dried version of the Poblano chili variety. They have flavors of licorice, cherries, raisins, and tobacco.
They are used in the Mexican mole sauce and to make chili sauce. They can also be ground into chili powder.
